The mission of Hillcrest Elementary School is to provide a positive educational experience for all students in a safe and comfortable environment. We encourage acceptance of differences. We emphasize cooperation, caring, and respect for self and others.
We seek to provide a challenging curriculum with flexibility to meet the individual learning needs of each student. The school's program will address all aspects of human development, including aesthetic, emotional, intellectual, physical, artistic and social development and responsibility.
In partnership with parents and the community, our goal is to nurture life long learning, essential for the future in a global society.
Hillcrest Elementary School is located in a relatively modern residential suburb of Salmon Arm. Presently, the school enrolls kindergarten to Grade 5 and has a population of 230 students.
Built originally in 1972 due to suburban growth in the area, the school completed a major expansion in 1991, which included a full sized gymnasium, classrooms, library, and a computer lab. In addition the school also has rooms specifically designated and equipped for Science, Music, Fine Arts, and Special Needs Students.
The families are predominantly English-speaking with a strong middle class socio-economic base.
The school is located in a delightful setting of forests, hills, and playfields. Staff, students, parents, and community have valued this natural setting.
The Hillcrest Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is known in the District as being active and involved. Attendance at the monthly meetings is generally between 20 and 30 parents. The PAC has a strong reputation for supporting and enhancing school programs. The parents take advantage of the open door policy and are active participants in their child?s learning.
Many community organizations and clubs have utilized the school over the years. Some of the long serving ones include the Judo Club, Minor Hockey, Girl Guides and Minor Baseball. Women's Rugby, Rotary, drumming and fitness clubs also use the school in the evenings.
At one time, Hillcrest School enrolled the district severe special needs students but with the integration of these students into their neighbourhood schools, Hillcrest primarily enrolls students within its own boundaries. It continues to be respected for its fine service to all students.
